After mechanical transportation was abondoned, scientists had no idea of how to get around. People were panicking; some had relatives across the ocean, and they had no way to get to the shore to catch a boat. Lands had broken off, disappearing under the water, and new islands had surfaced, giving to more land and a little less water. But that really didn't help much, because the oceans were still huge and freezing cold. They got so desperate as to resort to books.
Suddenly, thousands of people started to talk about one thing: dragons. The mystic creatures of different backgrounds and statures had huge fans around the world. Finally, the scientists decided to try the idea, and started working. For months everybody thought that the experts had locked themselves in a building, seeing as no press could get any information on how the work was progressing. The first inkling of an idea was when the scientists successfully created Mini Dragons, small dragons that could perch on your shoulder, breath fire and ice, and have differently colored scales. Many people were happy, but they didn't know if they would continue with the project.
Six months after the arrival of the Mini Draogns, the people of the former USA's New England was greeted by a handful of people, riding glorious dragons. Approval rose from every part of the almost empty globe. Using one the largest Island, Kreole, as a "base", the first group of Dragon Riders created a home place for the dragons. And soon, the queen dragon laid a clutch to the first generation of dragons on Earth.
The first few dragon generations were quiet and peaceful, the folk of Earth had nothing to complain about because even they had a good chance of getting searched (after all, there weren't a lot of people left), and everybody got along. But of course these things can't last forever. One candidate that had stood at every single hatchings, named Jake Soyer, ended up cursing the dragon riders and moved out.
For a good year nothing was heard of Jake, even though many people were worried for quite a while. Then, just when it seemed that Jake had left Earth, he suddenly came back again. Claiming Australia for himself (yes, he kept the name. And yes, the island of the Dragon Riders was larger than Australia, just by a little), he revealed what had kept him occupied for one whole year.
Snaklizards.
These things were cousins to the dragons, and not a very good creature to be related to. They had long, thin bodies, forked tongues, and could breath poison instead of fire and ice. Their wings were leathery and tattered, they though they weren't hideous, the reputation they got made them fairly scary. At this time, some people had gotten annoyed at the Dragon Riders, and whoever was went to join Jake as a Trainee for a Snakelizard.
After a few generations, dragons and snakelizards still fight, dragons protecting the citizens who like them, the snakelizards just fighting dragons because that's what they were made to do. Now, Jake's descendents have even gone to stealing dragon eggs and killing (torturing) the baby hatchlings. And things are starting to get really tense between the two forces...
